Historical Stock Returns of S&P 500 Companies

The table below lists the historical annual total returns (dividends included) of the individual S&P 500 companies currently part of the index*. The total annual return of S&P 500 index was 31.49% in 2019. The total yearly return of the equally weighted S&P 500 was slightly lower, 29.24%. The top five best performing companies in the index were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (148.43%), Lam Research Corp (119.33%), KLA-Tencor Corp. (103.99%), Target Corp. 100.17% and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc 93.87%. The worst performing company still part of the index was PG&E Corp. whose share price lost more than half of its value (-54.23%).

*Note: The components part of the index are not fixed but every year approximately 20 to 30 companies are replaced with new stocks (examine component changes from here). If no returns are available in the table for a certain company during a certain year, this means that the company was not yet publicly listed during this time. For companies that were added to the index between 2010 and 2019, the total returns are listed on the table also before the companies were included to the index. S&P 500 Stock Total Returns 2019

The graph above lists the annual total returns of the companies that were part of S&P 500 at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year (index survivors) for the year 2019. Among these companies, 89% provided positive returns and 11% provided negative returns for investors during 2019. The median return of the companies was 29.16%.
