The table below lists the historical annual total returns (dividends included) of the 500 largest U.S. companies. During the last year, the top five best performing large cap companies were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (+148.43%), Lam Research Corp (+119.33%), KLA-Tencor Corp. (+103.99%), Target Corp. (+100.17%) and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (+93.87%). The total annual return of S&P 500 index was 31.49% in 2019. The total yearly return of the equally weighted S&P 500 was slightly lower, 29.24%.

S&P 500 Stock Total Returns 2019

The graph above lists the annual total returns of the companies that were part of S&P 500 at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year (index survivors) for the year 2019. Among these companies, 89% provided positive returns and 11% provided negative returns for investors during 2019. The median return of the companies was 29.16%.
